BARRY CHOI: That Time a Single RedFlagDeals Post Reminded Me Why I Love Saving Money

A friend recently shared a ridiculous deal found on RedFlagDeals.com, where you could get 100% cash back on new account subscriptions using a VPN. This caught my attention for a few reasons.

First, the deal was from RFD, a site I used to visit religiously, but I havenโ€™t checked it out in years. Seeing a hot deal brought back memories of past finds, like 50% off video games or great deals on internet plans.

The other obvious reason this deal stood out is that it was a 100% cashback offer from Rakuten. If youโ€™re not familiar, Rakuten is a site that gives you cash back when you make online purchases through their shopping portal.

I love cash back sites because they give you money back on purchases you'd make anyway. Whatโ€™s funny about this deal is that a user on RFD noted that if you changed your tax address to California, USA, you wouldnโ€™t be charged tax at all. Yes, itโ€™s a bit unethical, but I wanted to save another $13.

I jumped on this deal and less than 24 hours later, I had the cash back in my Rakuten account.

Besides Rakuten, one of my favourite cash back sites is the Aeroplan eStore. Instead of earning a percentage back in cash, you earn Aeroplan points on your purchases. The Aeroplan eStore features hundreds of merchants, including Amazon and Apple, providing another opportunity to earn points.

Some people may not think these sites are worth the effort, but it only takes a few clicks to activate your offers. There are even web browser plugins available that alert you when a site youโ€™re on partners with Rakuten or Aeroplan, so youโ€™ll never miss out on rewards.

When you sign up for Rakuten with a referral link, youโ€™ll get $30 cash back right away.

Besides cash-back sites, I also love using Flipp. Itโ€™s an app for digital flyers that lets you scan all the local flyers in your neighbourhood. Whether youโ€™re after grocery deals or Halloween decorations, youโ€™ll always find the best prices.

Flipp has been a game-changer for my family because I plan my menu around whatโ€™s on sale. Since I plan every meal, I rarely throw out food or get tempted to order takeout because I donโ€™t have everything ready to eat.

๐Ÿž Claim more free money from the Loblaw bread price-fixing class-action suit

Claims are now open for Canadian bread buyers to get their share of a $500-million class-action lawsuit settlement paid by Loblaw for their role in the 2001 bread price-fixing scandal. Even if you already claimed a $25 Loblaw card before, you can still receive additional compensation of an undetermined amount, depending on the number of claims received. No proof of purchase is required.

๐Ÿšฌ Sick Smokers can get up to $100,000 in a new class action settlement

A whopping $32.5-billion tobacco settlement was just finalized on August 29 for people affected by the harmful effects of smoking and their family members. The rules are slightly different by province. If youโ€™re in Quebec, youโ€™ll get up to $100,000 for throat or lung cancers and up to $30,000 for emphysema. Outside of Quebec, sufferers and their families get up to $60,000 each for lung or throat cancer and up to $18,000 for emphysema.

I started this week with two slices of cold pizza and a sandwich that may or may not have had chicken in it. All because I decided to try eating only what I could find on food-waste apps. No extra groceries and no sneaky Uber Eats orders. Just me, my phone, and whatever I could scavenge on TooGoodToGo, Flashfood, and FoodHero. I wanted to see if these apps could actually feed me for a week and whether Iโ€™d save money doing it.

๐ŸŽ Loblaws is removing tariff pricing

Thanks to Canadaโ€™s removal of retaliatory tariffs on American goods, which began on September 1, Loblaws has announced that it will be gradually reducing the tariff pricing it implemented. The reductions will be gradual, though, as the stores, which include Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills and Real Canadian Superstores, will need to sell off the inventory they purchased under tariffs before prices can be lowered back to normal.

๐Ÿšซ Low-income earners in Yukon can now keep more of their money from public debt repayments

A precedent-setting decision from 2024 resulted in the Yukon government creating new regulations around wage garnishment that came into effect on August 29. The new rules protect low income earners from having part of their wages seized to repay public debt, like unpaid taxes or child and spousal support. A debtor without dependents can keep $2,000 per month, and the amount increases with more dependents. The rules differ between provinces: in Ontario, the maximum amount creditors can garnish is 50% of your wages, while in B.C., itโ€™s 30%.
