Before we get into the serious part of this newsletter (you know, the part where you save money), I wanted to talk to you about this weird bald guy that appears in the picture above with me.
He might not have hair and he might not dress as well as me, but he's a great guy and a personal finance savant. He's bringing to the table his experience as the former CEO of another personal finance website called Hardbacon, and he will be taking over this newsletter.
I will still be involved in most aspects of MooseMoney, such as finding the deals you can find at the end of the newsletter and engaging with you guys on our Reddit sub, but starting next week, Julien is the one who will sign the newsletter.

Alberta Teachers Make T-Shirts and Crochet Scrunchies to Pay Bills While They're on Strike

Looking for some side hustle inspiration? Since Alberta teachers are on a province-wide strike, some of them have turned to creative side hustles in order to help pay their bills. Greg Pollard, a Fort McMurray social studies teacher, is using a heat press machine in his basement to make custom clothing like team jerseys, while Airdrie music teacher Sarah Batchelor is crocheting and selling hair scrunchies and mug cozies. If you're curious, you can buy a heat press machine from Amazon for $240 and start your own side hustle.

New Automatic Tax Filing System Makes It Easier to Get Government Benefit Cheques

Mark Carney announced that a new automatic tax filing system would be coming in 2027 for low-income Canadians. Since government benefits like the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and the Canada Disability Benefit can't be given unless taxes are filed, this ensure that low-income people are getting the benefits that they're entitled to.

Major Banks Keep Dumping Customers

After CTV reported a story on RBC cutting ties with a decades-long customer, more than 100 people have shared similar stories of getting dumped by other major banks, including BMO. The process of "debanking" is rare but apparently allowed with reasonable notice. Otherwise, you could be entitled to a refund of fees or compensation if you didn't get enough notice. To be safe, we'd recommend opening a secondary no-fee account at a bank like EQ, Neo or Tangerine in case you get debanked, and you'll earn more interest this way, too.

Like most people, Iβve wondered how Dollarama is able to sell the same grocery store items as other retailers for lower prices. After meticulously comparing the prices of 88 food items from Dollarama with those at Walmart, No Frills, and Food Basics, however, I realized that Dollarama's food is more often than not more expensive.

Janes Pub Style Chicken Strips, Nuggets or Burgers
$1.85
This is a crafty hack I found from Red Flag Deals. Janes Pub Style Chicken Strips, Nuggets and Burgers are currently on sale at No Frills until October 22 for $5.85, down from $10. Then, if you go to this website, you can get a $4-off coupon, reducing the total cost to a measly $1.85. Even if you don't live near a No Frills, the $4-off coupon is still pretty handy!

Thanks to this deal, spotted by Instagrammer @LivingonaLoonie, if you order a hot brewed coffee through the Tim Hortons app, you'll get 400 points which you can redeem towards a future coffee. Or, hey, go wild and get a bunch of Timbits instead! I won't judge you.
