Sweet Saskatchewan, over 4,000 Canadians now read this newsletter! This moose's side hustle is growing faster than Disney+ prices (which are about to jump ANOTHER $40, by the way).

Thanks for your trust and keep sharing this newsletter with your friends (and hiding it from your enemies).

My goal is to make each issue better than the previous one, and one of the ways to do that (other than spending more time on each issue) is to build a community around it.

I'm spending a lot of time on Reddit these days, trying to answer personal finance questions, but I am also trying to get the r/MooseMoney sub off the ground.

While there are already wonderful Canadian communities on Reddit like r/PersonalFinanceCanada and r/CanadaFinance to ask personal finance questions, and r/churningcanada to figure out how to abuse credit card welcome bonuses, most subs will ban you if you attempt to post a referral link...

So I decided to let anyone post referral links on r/MooseMoney; just make sure you pick the "Referral Links" flair when posting a referral link.

While you might not have known you can make some extra cash this way, your bank, phone company or favourite app probably has a referral program you just never noticed. Just sign up to your different accounts, and look out for keywords like "Invite your friends" or "Refer your friends", and post whatever link you find on r/MooseMoney.

Just make sure to be transparent about how much you stand to earn from other people's sign-ups and, most importantly, what they can get in return for using your link to sign up!

This Free Canadian App Could Cut Your Grocery Bill By $50-100 Per Week

A University of Waterloo student has created Skrimp.AI, a free app that uses artificial intelligence to help Canadian families slash their grocery bills by $50-100 per week. The app finds the best deals at local stores, generates personalized shopping lists based on your family size and dietary needs, and suggests recipes using ingredients you'll actually use again. The app is currently available in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge, with plans to expand across Canada.

I thought this would be easy, or at the very least fun. I was wrong. The challenge? I had to spend a full 40-hour work week trying to make as much money as possible using my phone.

Spotify is upgrading its free tier to let users search for and play any specific song they want, instead of being stuck with shuffle-only playback. This upgrade makes Spotify's free version much more usable, so if you are a Premium subscriber, you should consider downgrading to save $12.69 per month. BARRY CHOI: The Bizarre Love Story Between Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons Loyalty Programs

Earlier this month, Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons announced that their respective loyalty programs, Triangle Rewards and Tim Rewards, would be partnering. While no formal date was announced, starting next year, customers who link their accounts will be able to earn CT Money and Tim Rewards on the same transaction. Additionally, there will be exclusive offers for linked accounts.

While it might seem odd that two major Canadian brands are teaming up, it has become quite common in the loyalty space. PC Optimum is linked to DoorDash, Aeroplan collaborates with Uber, and Air Miles has a partnership with Shell, among others.

Although retailers may have pursued exclusives in the past, they’ve likely realized that consumers are rarely loyal to just one brand. Plus, a restaurant is very different from a hardware or home store, so it appeals to an entirely different audience. Building a partnership benefits both parties.

Ultimately, what both companies are after is your data. Loyalty programs can track exactly what you’re buying, how much you’re spending, and how often you’re making those purchases. By sharing that info with their partners, everyone can attempt to target you with more offers, hoping to encourage you to spend more.

But does it actually work? Well, it depends on the consumer. Some offers are simply too good to pass up. For example, a few months ago, Triangle Rewards offered me $10 in CT Money if I filled up at least 25 litres of gas at Petro-Canada or Gast+. You can be sure I took advantage of that deal instead of going to Esso, my usual gas station. But that wasn’t enough to get me to make a permanent switch.

What we’re likely to see in the future are some CT Money offers related to Tim Hortons purchases. Both retailers hope these offers will be convincing enough to change your shopping habits.

Toronto-Lisbon Round Trip in January

$387

You might think that, as a Moose, I love winter, and you would be completely wrong. I left the forest for a reason, peeps! I hate being cold! And while my Toronto apartment is warm, I get depressed in January, as I don't get fresh air... So when I found this deal for Lisbon in January, I was pretty stoked. I immediately pictured myself surfing next January. That said, the sea temperature in January is about 16Β°C, so while it's much warmer than here, you will probably need a wetsuit to survive your surfing addiction.
